Plarn Mats

Plarn mats are mats or mattresses you sleep on made of plastic yarn. Plarn is many recycled milk bags cut, tied and crochet together.

Christmas Hampers

Another initiative we are taking as a school is the hamper project. The hamper project is a time to bring in needed products to families who are less fortunate.
The hampers might include:
Food and other nutrition products,

Clothing,

other items they might need, and a personal gift for each member of the family.

Hat and Mitten Tree

We have finished another one of our fundraisers for Christmas. We made a hat and mitten tree. It has been emptied 3 times. So many generous kids have donated hats and mittens to those in need. The fundraiser was fun. Here is a video of all the images taken during the fundraiser. Enjoy!

Free The Children Initiatives

Two initiatives we are taking part in are:
-Milk Bag mats
-Penny Drive

For the Penny Drive you have to bring in as many pennies you can to fill a bag that holds about 25 dollars. That 25 dollars provides clean water for someone who doesn't have water, for their whole life.

Milk Bag mats are hundreds of empty milk bags weaved together into mats. Imagine that you had to sleep on the muddy ground with no protection. Milk bag mats are really comfortable and it provides a sleeping spot for people who don't have one.

Double Lunch Day

Double Lunch Day is a day to help our community. The students at St. Gabriels were asked to bring a second, or third lunch to help provide food for the Ottawa Mission. The extra lunches provide food for the mission's back to work and back to school programs. Thanks to all the students. Below is a video off some images from Double Lunch Day!

The five winning classes in order from 1st to last were: Mme Brousseau, Mr. Hiscock, Mme Begin, Mr. Joe and Mr. Rusch. We thank these people for the exceptionally generous donations.  Here is a video that we made full of all the images when the contest was still going on.

The Activities Supporting the Kanata Food Cupboard

The contest:

In order to motivate the students to collect a large amount  of cereal and rice, we first brainstormed some activities for the 5 winning classrooms (We have five groups in our class). Then we made some posters for the event. The posters stated the items in which to bring in, that there are five winners, the closing date for the contest and a small illustration.

Kanata Food Cupboard

For Thanksgiving we looked at a high priority website of the Kanata Food Cupboard to find the foods that they urgently needed. We looked at the high priority list of foods, and decided to increase the amount of rice and cereal. Our class put in an effort to bring in rice and cereal. For even further success in bringing in rice and cereal we created a contest.

Why we do it

The grade six students at St.Gabriel school are taking part in the Free The Children campaign. Through local and international initiatives, we are creating awareness towards social justice and hunger. We are in Ottawa, Canada and we have produced activities and contests to raise awareness to this global cause.
